Storytelling exists everywhere around us and as businesses, our storytelling - our communication and messaging - matters, because we are influencing our audience.
We influence them to buy our products and services. We influence how they feel, how they think. The language we choose creates certain emotional connections (or disconnects). Storytelling comes down to connecting on a human level, inspiring action, and creating lasting impressions. So if you find your messaging falling flat, and you feel like you’re speaking to the sound of crickets… Or you're just not sure how to tell your story... Here are 6 tips for harnessing the power of storytelling to help your business stand out in a crowded market: 🎈 Have a conversation not a monologue. The best brands I know have honest conversations with their customers and aren’t afraid of letting their blemishes show. They invite the audience into the conversation and into the story. 🎈Do some character building. You not only need to know who you are, inside and out…but you need to know your ideal customer inside and out. What are your dreams, goals, desires, fears, challenges, and potential pitfalls? And what are theirs? What does your ideal customer care about? What’s their daily lifestyle like? Knowing your characters inside and out will help you relate to your ideal customer and have a clear and consistent voice. 🎈Start with a hook. Capture your audience’s attention from the get-go. But remember to be click-worthy and not click-baity. 🎈Know your purpose. Every story has an overarching theme - an overarching message. What is the main message you want to communicate? Knowing this grounds your story and makes your messaging clear to the target audience. 🎈Conflict and resolution. Every compelling story has a problem that needs to be resolved. What are the challenges that led you to where you are? What about the challenges that have brought your customer to you? And what’s the solution? 🎈Be clear about your values. Your values are what’s going to leave a lasting impression and keep you in the game for the long run. Root your values into your story, and make sure they’re clear as you tell your story. The power of storytelling is undeniable. Just ask my client whose About Us page I wrote a few years ago, capturing the story of their family and the journey (and food) that led them to start Carmen's Authentic Mexican Food. “...Our biggest opportunity blossomed when we received an order from the Phoenix Suns, and our "About us" page [which Justine wrote] was a significant factor in closing the deal...” - Daniel Tye, Carmen's Authentic Mexican Food Nowadays, people can buy almost anything anywhere any time. But it's your story and your values that are going to draw your target audience to you. Is storytelling an area of communication that you struggle with? Do you need support in mastering the art of storytelling to humanize your communications?
