Does Your Email Newsletter Read Like a Blog? Here’s Why That’s a Problem.

Your email list is one of your biggest business assets. But if your emails read like blog posts, you might be treating it like just another content platform instead of what it really is—a direct line to your audience.
Emails ≠ Blogs. Here’s Why.

A blog is public. It’s written to be found—by Google by new visitors, by people scrolling the internet.

An email is private. It’s an exclusive conversation between you and your subscribers. It should feel personal, direct, and like it actually belongs in someone’s inbox—not like a blog post that accidentally got copied and pasted into an email.

The 3 biggest problems with blog-style emails

1. They don’t feel personal.

A blog is written for a general audience. A great email is written like a note to a friend. Your subscribers should feel like you’re speaking to them, not delivering a lecture to a faceless crowd.


2. They don’t drive action.

Blogs inform. Emails engage. The best emails get people to do something—hit reply, click a link, book a call. If your email doesn’t have a clear next step, you’re missing the whole point.


3. They get ignored.

No one opens an email expecting to read an essay. People skim. If your email is too long, too dense, or trying to do too much, it’ll get archived faster than you can say “unsubscribe.”


What to do instead:
  • Write like you’re talking to one person. If your email sounds like it was written for everyone, it connects with no one.
  • Make it scannable. Short paragraphs. Bullet points. Bolded text. Give readers an easy way to grasp your message fast.
  • Keep it focused. One clear message. One takeaway. One action step.
  • Always include a CTA. This is where you can direct people to your actual blog!


Bottom line? Make it feel like a letter, not an article.

Your email list isn’t just another content platform—it’s a relationship. Treat it like one.

So, before you send your next email, ask yourself: Does this sound like a blog? If the answer is yes, it’s time to trim it down, tighten it up, and make it feel like something worth opening.
