10 UI Tips for a Smooth UX

Recently, my friends and I had an extremely frustrating experience trying to book a spa day for our best friend's bachelorette.

And if it were not for our best friend's bachelorette, we would have just said "screw it" and they would have lost hundreds of dollars of business.

This made me think of the less glamorous side, but equally important part of copywriting...UI. What's UI?
UI stands for User Interface. UI copywriting refers to all the text and words that you see on a website.

That means, the buttons, labels, error messages, tooltips, and any other text elements that guide visitors through the interface.

In our case of trying to book the spa day, the spa could've improved its error messages or included simple responses, such as when a particular service is booked up. They had other technical issues, too, but the most basic problem they had was an unclear journey navigating their website.

So when advising clients, I always remind them to think about the customer's journey. Often we think of how things ideally play out, but what happens when things don't ideally play out? What kinds of errors or issues can you anticipate?

Making your website both easy to navigate and a guiding experience will improve your visitors' experiences and therefore gain and retain customers.

Here are 10 tips to elevate your website experience make visitors feel like VIPs:

  1. 🧳 Be Concise, Be Clear: When it comes to UI copy, less is more! Keep your words snappy and to the point. Nobody wants to read a novel on a button. For example, use "Join Now" instead of "Become a Member Today and Unlock Exclusive Benefits."
  2. 🌟 Be Action-Packed: Your UI copy is like a cheerleader, encouraging users to take action! Use action-oriented verbs like "Get Started," "Explore," or "Discover" to ignite that spark of curiosity and engagement.
  3. 🚀 Error Messages with Empathy: Oopsie daisy! Errors happen, but don't make users feel bad about it. Craft error messages with a gentle and understanding tone. For example, "Oops, it seems something went wrong. Please try again later. We've got your back!"
  4. 🏆 Make Your Labels Friendly: Labels are like friendly tour guides for your users. Instead of generic "Name" or "Email," try "Your Awesome Name" and "Your Super Email." A touch of personality goes a long way!
  5. 📞 A Clear Call-to-Action (CTA) is Key: Your CTA should be the belle of the ball! Make it stand out with contrasting colors and make it super obvious what will happen when users click it. "Grab Your Free Sample Now!" will get hearts racing!
  6. 🌈 Colors That Spark Joy: Colors set the mood, so choose wisely! Vibrant colors can add energy, while a calm palette can soothe. Just remember, make sure there's enough contrast for readability.
  7. 🌐 Navigation Magic: Navigation should be a breeze, not a maze! Keep it simple and intuitive. Group similar pages together and add a "Home" link so users can always find their way back to the party.
  8. 🤩 Embrace the Power of Microcopy: Microcopy is those tiny bits of text that provide extra guidance and charm. Add a playful "Ta-da!" when a task is completed or a sweet "Almost there!" during a loading process.
  9. 📱 Be Mobile-Friendly: It's estimated over 50% of all eCommerce purchases during the 2022 holiday season were made on a smartphone. So make sure your UI copy looks slick on all devices.
  10. 🎉 Test and Tweak, Test and Tweak: Test your UI copy, gather feedback, and make improvements based on what resonates best with your visitors. Remember to keep your website updated.
Now you're ready to welcome all to your virtual home. Incorporate these UI copywriting tips to get your website steaming ahead full speed! 🚂💨!
